Press Release - Indonesia Clean Energy Development Program (ICED-USAID) in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar

 

Aceh has a large potential of biogas energy development. According to Central Bureau of Statistic’s data 2013, the total population of cattle in Aceh Province is 701,284. Since 2012, Yayasan Kemaslahatan UmmatYKU (Kemaslahatan Ummat Foundation) has been developing a biogas energy program made of cow in Aceh Besar District. The first pilot project was conducted in Meunasah Papeun Village, Krueng Barona Jaya Subdistrict, Aceh Besar District.

 

Since March to September 2014, YKU is being an implementing partner of USAID for Indonesia Clean Energy Development (ICED) Program, during which YKU has constructed 20 household scale biogas reactors in Aceh Besar, two medium biogas reactors in tofu factory, and one biogas reactor in a boarding school In Aceh Besar. The objective of this program under USAID-ICED is to increase people’s energy independence while at the same time to preserve the environment, to support the improvement of the local economy, and ultimately to reduce the carbon emission out of green house effect.

YKU has been designing the reactor which is simple, easy, and affordable, hence could be developed later on by the community. The biogas reactor is constructed of polyethylene (PE) plastic 0.2 mm, thus the unit price of a biogas reactor is relatively affordable by the community. The replacement of conventional   fossil   energy by   biogas would Improve and expand the community’s energy independence.

 

The villages which are benefited from biogas program out of cow manure are Ulee Pata (Kec. Jaya Baru, Aceh Besar): 2 reactors, Lam Permai (Kec. Krueng Barona Jaya, Aceh Besar): 6 reactors, Kayee Le (Kec. Ingin Jaya, Aceh Besar): 1 reactor, Lampeuneueun (Kec. Darul Imarah, Aceh Besar): 6 reactors, and Saree (Kec. Saree Aceh, Aceh Besar): 6 reactors. The villages which are benefited out of tofu factory waste are Blower (Kec. Suka Ramai, Banda Aceh): 1 reactor and Desa Geuceu (Kec. Banda Raya, Banda Aceh): 1 reactor. And beneficiary out of human waste is Pesantren Al Manar in Desa Lam Permai (Kec. Krueng Barona Jaya, Aceh Besar).

Beneficiaries obtain significant economic benefits as a an added value, i.e. the transfer of conventional energy consumption costs to other productive expenditure for additional family incomes, cost of education, health, and other costs of living.

The event of USAID-ICED Close-Out Workshop, 29 September 2014, was opened officially by Hj. Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal, SE, Mayor of Banda Aceh, and attended by USAID Indonesia Program Manager, Mr. Brian Dusza, officials of Ministry of Mining and Energy, WASH Working Group Jakarta, and regional departments related to renewable energy Aceh. Opening Ceremony was continued with site visit to several biogas facilities di Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, and in the afternoon was proceeded with scientific exposures about renewable energy by 3 resource person from Ministry ESDM, Mining and Energy Department Aceh, and University of Syiah Kuala.

It is eventually expected that the positive impact of these activities would contributes to Indonesia and USAID emission reduction efforts, and to continue to reduce further in the following years with the widespread use of biogas energy specifically in Aceh, and throughout Indonesia in general.
